Irving Police Department Hiring Process
The Irving Police Department's hiring process consists of 12 phases:

Complete Preliminary Information Form - this form is located on the “registration” tab of this website and will be submitted online. (Make sure you fit requirements before submitting.) This form will either be approved or disapproved and notification will be sent back to the applicant by email. If approved, the applicant will then be able to register for a police officer testing day.

Register for Civil Service Exam - the civil service exam is offered several times a year. Registration can be completed by submitting an online registration form on the “registration“ tab of this website.

Civil Service Exam - This is a written test consisting of multiple choice questions covering subjects such as, spelling, reading comprehension and memory skills. There is a study guide available on the registration page of this website or general study guide books can be found at libraries, bookstores, and on the internet at some of the police employment web sites. An applicant's score on this test will rank them on our eligibility list. The eligibility list will be posted on the registration page of this website. The applicant's ranking will determine when they are called back to finish the rest of the process. A military veteran with an honorable discharge who shows their DD214 at the time of the test, will receive 5 extra points on the exam after receiving a passing score (70).

Physical fitness test - This test is generally done on the same day as the civil service test. Each event is scored separately and you must meet the standard on each and every event. Rest periods are offered between events.

Personal History Statement - the police officer application or Personal History Statement (PHS) is provided to applicants on the test day. A list of information needed to complete the PHS is located on the ”application” tab of this website. The PHS is due on the Friday following the test by 5:00 p.m.

Pre Polygraph Interview - Conducted by a background investigator to cover information such as, prior criminal activities, drug usage, credit, work history, driving history, and other topics.

Polygraph exam - Administered by an independent consultant

Background Investigation - This consists of interviewing family members, references, acquaintances, past employers, co-workers, a review of military and school records, driving records, credit history, and any other area the investigator deems appropriate.

Oral Interview Board - This is an interview with 4 police officers where the applicant is presented with hypothetical situations.

Conditional Offer of Employment - Upon passing the oral review board, the applicant will be given a Conditional Offer of Employment.

Psychological Exam and Interview - This exam is scheduled by the police department with a licensed psychologist, independent from the police department.

Medical Exam/Drug Screen - This physical is scheduled by the department with a licensed physician and includes as a minimum, a vision test, audiogram, blood pressure, and back x-rays.
